In my case, I work with a couple of art collectives, and we've been studying CAD together so everyone has a firmer grasp for a variety of reasons ( crosstrain, always ), and I had suggested Fusion because I knew everyone in the group could use it, and if we had projects in Fusion, we could use them in the future. You were almost certainly using Fusion because there was the likelihood the students could use it even if they were hobbyists. "Free for educators" isn't enough, because you know that people will be out of your classroom and at home or semi-pro as well as pro, and you won't want to have taught them a system they can't afford. Perfectly argued, and let me make a slightly different case. I won't be recommending Fusion to anyone ( I did, and had several art projects converted to Fusion, that stops today ). I know how "death by a thousand cuts" goes, seen it before. This year, roll back the "free for hobbyists" by reducing some significant functionality, and when this doesn't work, what's next?

We expected Autodesk to do this, and now know they're willing to. When you invest in a user interface, you're investing in a workflow, and you're investing even in how to think about the different CAD functionality because you end up building your model knowing the operations of the CAD program. Bleh.įor the "low profile" user, who is designing and printing a few simple things, this feature set doesn't effect them much, I think. that's a spool and a half of filament, every month, even if stop designing for a few months. This is the kind of cost of systems like Adobe CS, so it's not out of range, and it compares favorably to a copy of SolidWorks. I think the real question is whether the "high profile" people you're talking about, who will spend $600 for a printer which becomes $1000 with upgrades, and buy a few rolls of filament per month at $25/roll, will find $500 per year palatable.
